Personality and Traits

Not much is known about Shane's personality. However, descriptions of him describe him as being a friendly and carefree engine whose positive ways make him many friends.

Technical Details

Shane is based on the South Australian Railways 520 class. The real engine that carries his number, Sir Malcolm Barclay Harvey, is currently preserved by the SteamRanger Preservation Society and resides at their workshops in Mount Barker, South Australia, after being taken out of service in 1998.

Whereas his original basis was built for broad gauge lines, Shane is scaled down to standard gauge. He is also partially modified to work on British railways, as he is fitted with buffers and a screwlink coupling on his tender.

Shane is painted teal with yellow lining. His number, 520, is painted above his face in white writing, as well as the sides of his cab in yellow. He has the initials of the South Australian Railway painted on the sides of his tender in yellow writing, and his wheels are painted black with white rims.

  • Shane's nickname, the "Whispering Giant", is a real nickname that his basis was known by. Due to their long blowers, the SAR 520 class required blower assistance in yards to prevent smoke from blowing into the cab, which made a quiet, whispering noise.
