"Fearless" Freddie is an old narrow gauge tank engine who lives on the Skarloey Railway. He was nicknamed "Fearless Freddie" by the other engines due to his bravery, as during his youth, he liked to race up and down the mountain line, which gives him plenty of experience on all the old tracks.
After many years of absence, Freddie returned to the Skarloey Railway. It is not known why he was absent, but he was most likely on loan to another railway or was undergoing an extensive overhaul.
When he returned to the railway, Freddie challenged Skarloey and Rheneas to a series of races up and down the mountain line. However, Freddie discovered that he was not as fast or strong as he had been in his youth, and was beginning to lose to the other two engines. In order to ensure that he would win, Freddie used his extensive knowledge on the old mountain tracks to get ahead of the engines, but his cheating put Rhenas in danger when he derailed and rolled down the hill. Freddie realized his mistake, and helped the other engines find Rheneas. (TVS; Fearless Freddie)
Freddie was later given the job of delivering Mr. Percival's new bike, but the bike had not been fitted with a bell yet. Even though he did not know where to find one, Freddie decided to try and find the bell so that he would not look silly to the other engines, but he failed to find a suitable bell. In the end, he decided that using the old bell would be better than trying to find a new one. (TVS; Ding-a-Ling)
During the winter season, Freddie tried to reorganize a party so that Colin could take part, as he was permanently fixed at the Wharf. However, Freddie did not tell Mr. Percival his idea until the last minute, which led to the decorations nearly being shipped away. Freddie managed to fix his mistakes, and the party was held at the Wharf, which proved to be a success. (TVS; The Party Surprise)
Personality and Traits
- Freddie replaced Ivo Hugh as the Skarloey Railway's seventh engine in the television series.
- Strangely, Freddie was already acquainted with Sir Handel and the Skarloey Railway upon his return, yet he was unfamiliar with Skarloey and Rheneas, even though they were on the railway before Sir Handel's arrival.
- Freddie uses the same whistle sound that Emily originally used in the seventh season. Peter Sam also used this same whistle sound until the sixteenth season.
